Stereotype of South Korea

Hello everybody. How are you? I hope you are well and had a good day every day. Welcome to our blog again, and at this moment, we will talk about some stereotypes of South Korea.

As you guys know, some stereotypes might be negative or positive. let's start with the definition of a stereotype.

A stereotype is a generalization of an individual or group based on their image or idea, but sometimes it is not true in reality. A stereotype is usually based on rough, often negative generalizations.

Now, you understand the definition of a stereotype. So it's time to show you some of the stereotypes people had about South Korea.

Everyone Loves K-pop.

As you guys know, K-pop is a big cultural part of South Korea. Many people know what K-pop is, but do you believe that all people in South Korea loves K-pop? The answer is no. Even though you go to a cafe you will hear K-pop, on the street you will hear K-pop, even at university. They played K-pop through the speakers.  If you ask Koreans, do they enjoy hearing K-pop all the time? They will say no, most of the music they listen not even K-pop about 75% of the time. Even other people in another country will get sick listen to the same genre of music all the time and get annoyed. This kind of stereotype that people in South Korea loves K-pop needs to change.

There is Free Wifi Every Where.

This is another example of a stereotype that people need to change. South Korea indeed a developed country and had sophisticated technology, but it doesn't mean that you will find Wifi everywhere. If you come to a cafe you will find free wifi and ask the employee for the password, but you need to order some of their menus first then ask for the wifi. For some people who already visit South Korea is easier to buy a Korean sim card and data. it's not expensive and easy to use. Rather you had to walk on the street searching for free wifi.

Everyone speaks English and you don't need to learn Korean

If you visit South Korea and think that people there will be fluent or know some English. You are wrong. The young generation like students who study English might understand you, but if you ride a taxi or even asking people on the street they will not understand you most of the time. Do not think that when you visit South Korea don't expect that you and Koreans will get along without any communication issues. Some people who already visit South Korea recommend at least know the Korean alphabet to read a sign.

Korea is a safe place to live and to travel alone.

Many people who had been visiting South Korea would say that South Korea is feeling much safer than their country because in South Korea there is a lot of security camera and even all cars have a black box. So even there is a crime, the chance of getting caught is higher. From all of these facts doesn't mean that you shouldn't be careful.

Stick you Chopsticks into a Bowl of Rice.

No matter what kind of article you read, it will say to not stick your chopstick into a bowl of rice. It's not actually true, younger people nowadays don't even know that stick chopsticks into a bowl is bad. If you eat with elders it's might be considered rude and bad, but if you had dined with younger people they didn't really mind it. But you should know at least a few things about dining with South Koreans.

South Koreans will judge based on the Looks.

A lot of people say that South Koreans will judge you by your looks if you go there. It's actually not true. People just don't care about how you look. So you are not supposed to be scared that you will feel insecure because people judge you from your appearance. Even if they are judging you, it's positively not in a bad way.

South Korean eats Kimchi every day.

This stereotype is a famous one. Koreans indeed keeps a lot of their Kimchi on the separate fridge, however not all Korean especially younger one eats kimchi every day. The youngsters have a wide range of food choices, so they tend to choose that overeating kimchi every day.

Korean is Racist

Korea is famous for its high level of hardness, not only in real life but on social media as such. People in Korea are racist about the black race and the race of the people of the poor and developing country. They talk and act rather rudely. Another fact is that Koreans are not only racist to other races but to their own races that if they look fat, ugly, and poor. Many of the suicide rates that occur in Korea may be due to mental illness. For example, in the entertainment industry in Korea, they do not allow black people to debut. They just consider their race and those of Americans, Europeans, and Arabs who look good looking. The hope is that people in Korea can have more tolerance for other races and the level of racists there is declining.

Some other stereotype you might look for :
- open-minded
- ambitious
- progressive
- efficient
- materialistic
- arrogant
- assertive
- plastic-surgery lovers
- serial drama makers

So, that's the end. Some of it's might be true or not, it depends on what kind of South Korean citizen you met. That's all from us, thank you

    1. let's take an example in corporation or company, people with beautiful appearance or neat one will be more likely to be choosen by that company than people with so-so appearance, that is why Korean obsessed with their beauty standarts. It's also because the social pressure that they get, the more beautiful are you the more easy your life is.
